NHS Trust
Our client is a large NHS trust containing a number of hospitals and associated buildings. This trust is well established with strong links to its communities and has an excellent reputation within the wider NHS sector.
Scale of work
Initially, we were working for just one of the hospitals within the trust. The trust invited Protest to meet their head of estates, along with the head of health and safety, at their main headquarters after being recommended by the site manager at the hospital that we had already been partnering with for several years. The trust wanted to streamline the large number of sub-contractors it was using across its portfolio with a view to giving a number of electrical compliance services and associated remedial works to just one contractor, they were hoping there would be cost, quality and time saving benefits by using this methodology.

Approach and methodology
Our amicable and collaborative approach to testing
After meeting with the trust we were given the full scope of services required and the assets involved, stringent time frames for completion on each of the sites also had to be met to maintain compliance and legislative requirements. This meant we had full time engineers on site sometimes 7 days per week working both in and out of hours to minimise disruption whilst of course at all times being very respectful of the working conditions at the hospitals and associated buildings.
A comprehensive operational delivery programme was put in place and agreed with the client for the delivery of EICR fixed wire testing, pat testing, thermal imaging, emergency lighting testing and lighting replacements across the estate. The resultant remedial works would be carried out immediately by the in house trust maintenance teams and Protest often worked in conjunction with these teams on the larger scale install and remedial works. We held regular fortnightly operational review meetings with the head of estates for the trust and their head of maintenance to maintain a smooth collaborative working partnership throughout the course of the project. Clear and regular communication was a key part of the successful delivery of this huge project.
Electrical Compliance challenges presented
• Achieve compliance with the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 with a defined structured PPM
• Ensure that any potential health and safety issues are quickly addressed and highlighted
• All electrical remedial works are conducted in a timely manner
• Collation of all electrical documents for the whole site are safely held electronically in one place
• Paperless reporting that can be held and viewed at all times securely online
• Peace of mind for the duty holder(s) on site who are deemed responsible for health and safety
• Minimise disruption on site
• Use multi skilled engineers to deliver more than one service at within the same visit
Resulting outcome
Throughout our working partnership their was clear channels of communication which enabled all concerned to minimise any problems and with the client instructing Protest to carry out multiple services using our multi skilled engineers. Protest were also able to provide the client with significant cost savings whilst also minimising disruption on site and more importantly making sure the client met their statutory legal obligations and insurance needs.
