Leading University

Our client is one of the UK’s leading well known modern universities and has an international reputation for teaching excellence as well as strong links with business and industry on a local and national scale. This University has a large sprawling estate consisting of several hundred buildings and welcomes many thousands of students from the UK and across the world.

Scale of work

Our client made contact with us after being recommended by another local University. The background to this was that the University had conducted an internal health and safety audit and taken guidance from their insurance company due to the ongoing electrical maintenance challenges that they faced across such a large portfolio of ageing buildings and the need to meet their legal compliance and insurance requirements. It was highlighted that a clear defined PPM plan should be put in place without delay to cover the EICR Fixed Wire testing, PAT testing and Emergency Lighting testing in order to achieve electrical safety and compliance.

Approach and methodology

Our amicable and collaborative approach to testing

After several meetings with the client and detailed site surveys a PPM plan was put in place. Upon successful award of the tender, our operational project management team worked extensively with the University to amicably establish the programme of works, thus causing the least impact to the client. This is where our experience of working with many universities over the years proved invaluable. We were able to identify and plan for potential issues so we could ensure a collaborative smooth running of the project and taking into account of areas with special requirements.

Electrical Compliance challenges presented

•    Achieve compliance with the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 with a defined structured PPM
•    Meet the insurance companies requirements following the internal audit
•    Ensure that any potential health and safety issues are quickly addressed and highlighted
•    All electrical remedial works are conducted in a timely manner
•    Collation of all electrical documents for the whole site are safely held electronically in one place
•    Paperless reporting that can be held and viewed at all times securely online
•    Peace of mind for the duty holder(s) on site who are deemed responsible for health and safety

Resulting outcome

The client and dutyholder(s) were able to clearly demonstrate compliance within the latest regulations along with satisfying the insurance companies recommendations. Remedial actions identified during the PPM programmes were then separately project managed and corrected in a timely manner whilst causing least disruption to the client. Electronic reports were provided to the client on our online portal, this documentation can easily be viewed for reference by the client.
